Happy World NGO Day. Today we not only celebrate World NGO Day 2025, we are going further to spotlight 27 exceptional African NGOs that are driving sustainable change across the continent. Our goal is to inspire, connect, and celebrate the incredible work of these organizations and we hope you do too.
This list does not do justice to all of the organizations doing amazing work around the continent and we know there are much more than 27. We however use this as a medium to encourage them and others doing great work.
Meet Hexa’s Top 27 African NGOs 2025!
1. Project MEND (Nigeria)
Project MEND empowers women in Nigeria’s Ogun State by addressing poverty through vocational training. Founded in 2021 by former teachers, the organization shifted from direct aid to sustainable solutions, equipping low-income women with skills like bag-making to achieve financial stability. By uplifting mothers, Project MEND creates ripple effects for families and communities.
Key Achievements: Launched five vocational programs across Ogun State, secured funding from Agape Life Project and Chanza Africa, empowered 63 women, raised ₦3 million through crowdfunding, and earned the Teach for Nigeria Be-The-Change Award. Their Mend bags initiative stands as a symbol of sustainable change.
2. Hollar Care Foundation (Nigeria)
Hollar Care Foundation, founded in 2017 by Dr. Ayoola Unini, transforms lives through education, healthcare, and economic empowerment. Operating in Nigeria, Benin Republic, and Sierra Leone, it focuses on marginalized groups, including underprivileged children, widows, and persons with disabilities.
Key Achievements: Provided scholarships to 5,000+ children, distributed menstrual hygiene products via the Pad a Girl Initiative, increased widows’ entrepreneurship by 25%, and established vocational centers for tailoring and agriculture. Their medical outreaches offer free screenings and treatments to underserved communities.
3. Grace Agboniahor Foundation (GAF) (Nigeria)
This women-led NGO empowers Nigerian women and girls through education, entrepreneurship, and advocacy. Inspired by Madam Grace Agboniahor, GAF fosters confidence and leadership to drive national development.
Key Achievements: Disbursed N100,000 grants to women-led businesses, trained 12 girls in STEM, empowered 36 market women with health resources, and inspired 7 community actions against gender-based violence (GBV). Their GBV campaigns reached 500+ people.
4. Empowering Women for Excellence Initiative (EWEI) (Nigeria)
EWEI, led by Safiya Ibn Garba, champions women’s rights through advocacy and support services. Partnering with UN Women, they operate a toll-free GBV helpline, connecting survivors to medical, legal, and psychosocial aid.
Key Achievements: Established a nationwide GBV helpline, rescued a gang-rape survivor through rapid intervention, and supported thousands of women via partnerships with Salama Sexual Assault Referral Center. Their work restores dignity and livelihoods.
5. Willow Empowerment for Grassroot Development Initiative (Nigeria)
Willow NGO tackles agricultural challenges in Nigeria by training farmers in climate-smart practices and post-harvest management. Their goal is to reduce food insecurity and uplift rural economies.
Key Achievements: Trained farmers in modern techniques, promoted DryCards and Zero-Air Bags for storage, and improved market access for smallholders. Their programs have boosted productivity and resilience in over 10 communities.
6. Good Samaritan Association (Cameroon)
Based in Bamenda, this NGO supports education and livelihoods through back-to-school projects, vocational training, and menstrual hygiene campaigns.
Key Achievements: Distributed school supplies to remote areas, empowered displaced parents through soap and hair oil production training, and provided food/clothing to orphanages. Their initiatives help families achieve self-reliance.
7. SolumKoila Breast Cancer Foundation (Nigeria)
Focused on rural healthcare, this foundation raises breast cancer awareness and provides free screenings, treatment support, and advocacy.
Key Achievements: Reached 5,000+ people through campaigns, conducted free medical screenings, and launched the “United by Unique” initiative celebrating survivors. Their patient funding program saves lives in underserved areas.
8. Clare Cares Foundation (Nigeria)
Founded by Dr. Clare Ezeakacha, this NGO targets hunger, health, education, and poverty. It renovates orphanages, feeds children, and advocates against GBV.
Key Achievements: Renovated an orphanage, sent 350 children to school, fed 7,000+ kids, and distributed sanitary pads and food palliatives. Their stakeholder meetings address systemic issues like GBV.
9. Nexo Girls (Nigeria, Rwanda & Kenya)
Nexo Girls promotes gender equity in STEAM through digital literacy programs and mentorship. Founder Eunice Adewusi empowers young women to break barriers in tech.
Key Achievements: Trained 3,500+ youth in digital skills, launched the Tech4Her program across 8 countries, and won the 2024 Social Impact Venture Award. Their campaigns reach 40,000+ people globally.
10. Deploying Skills for Living Foundation (Nigeria)
This foundation empowers women and children through education and vocational training. Their projects include scholarships, skills workshops, and leadership programs.
Key Achievements: Awarded 384 scholarships, trained 200+ students in vocations, and distributed back-to-school kits to 4,000+ children. They aim to build libraries and expand across Northern Nigeria.
11. CLOTHED BY STERLING (Nigeria)
Clothed by Sterling leverages fashion to reduce inequality, recycling and distributing clothing while training women in basic fashion skills. Founded during the COVID-19 pandemic, the NGO partners with local organizations to serve underserved communities in Lagos.
Key Achievements: Distributed 3,000+ clothing and sanitary items, trained 10 women in fashion design, and collaborated with 9+ partners, including Lagos Food Bank and correctional centers. Their mask-making initiative during the pandemic provided critical protection to vulnerable groups.
12. REDBOX FOUNDATION (Nigeria)
REDBOX Foundation advances menstrual health awareness in rural Nigeria, combating stigma through education and product distribution. Their initiatives ensure women and girls access hygiene products and vital health information.
Key Achievements: Hosted Menstrual Hygiene Week with Girls and Goals Initiative, reaching thousands with educational sessions. Expanded to 14+ communities, including Kogi and Nasarawa states, and amplified advocacy via social media platforms like Instagram.
13. Betharbel Foundation (Nigeria)
Betharbel Foundation supports internally displaced persons (IDPs) and vulnerable communities through education, nutrition, and vocational training. Their holistic approach fosters resilience and sustainability.
Key Achievements: Educated 250+ IDP children, served thousands of meals, and empowered 172 individuals with vocational skills. Their work has strengthened community infrastructure and provided long-term economic opportunities.
14. Maina & Kids Children Foundation (Nigeria)
This NGO uplifts orphans, disabled, and underprivileged children across Northern Nigeria, promoting education and practical skills for sustainable growth.
Key Achievements: Executed 35+ projects, reaching thousands of children in 5 states. Provided scholarships, school supplies, and mentorship, enabling vulnerable youth to thrive academically and socially.
15. She Code Africa (Multiple Countries)
She Code Africa bridges the gender gap in tech by training African women in digital skills and leadership. Operating in 8+ countries, they foster economic independence and representation in STEM.
Key Achievements: Trained 2,674 women in tech, awarded 786 scholarships, and built a 33,000-member community. Their Tech Academy has 650 graduates shaping industries globally, with campaigns reaching 4.5 million+ digitally.
16. Stone of Help Women Empowerment Foundation (Ghana)
Led by Rev. Presicilla Boamah, this foundation empowers women through healthcare access and economic opportunities. Their NHIS enrollment drives prioritize marginalized groups.
Key Achievements: Registered 450+ women and children for healthcare in Accra’s Awoshie-Anyaa Market. Future goals include expanding partnerships to scale health and economic initiatives.
17. African Institute for Children Studies (Kenya)
AICS drives child welfare through research, advocacy, and capacity-building programs. They collaborate globally to improve services for vulnerable children.
Key Achievements: Published the Interdisciplinary Journal of the African Child, trained social workers across 3 continents, and supported 83 children via their Scholar-Leader Program. Their projects address child justice and mental health.
18. The Foundation Helping People (Burundi)
This Burundi- and U.S.-based NGO aids widows, orphans, and vulnerable children through education, entrepreneurship, and community development.
Key Achievements: Distributed food and soap to 60 families in Bujumbura, launched vocational training, and conducted 3 missions in 2024. Their expansion into Africa underscores their commitment to holistic support.
19. EASSI - Eastern Africa Sub-Regional Support Initiative (Uganda)
EASSI advances women’s rights across Eastern Africa, grounded in global frameworks like the Beijing Platform and SDGs. They advocate for gender equality and social justice.
Key Achievements: Influenced policy through CEDAW and Maputo Protocol alignment. For 28+ years, they’ve monitored women’s rights progress, ensuring governments uphold commitments to equity.
20. The Noble Hands Zimbabwe Trust (Zimbabwe)
Focused on albinism advocacy, this Trust combats skin cancer risks through education, healthcare access, and community programs.
Key Achievements: Launched the Albinism Konnect Programme, targeting 9,753 persons with albinism (PWA) in Zimbabwe. Advocates for sunscreen distribution and early cancer detection in rural areas with limited healthcare.
21. Phumelela - Eswatini's Mental Health Organisation (Eswatini)
Phumelela empowers GBV survivors, substance abusers, and at-risk youth through counseling, education, and vocational training.
Key Achievements: Provided psychosocial support to 500+ individuals, conducted community outreach on mental health, and reintegrated youth into society via skills workshops.
22. TeamUp Uganda (Uganda)
TeamUp integrates health, agriculture, and WASH initiatives to uplift 50,000 youth in Mityana District. Partnering with German foundations, they tackle systemic poverty.
Key Achievements: Improved farm yields via climate-smart training, enhanced healthcare access, and provided clean water solutions. Their multi-sector approach addresses root causes of youth marginalization.
23. Treatment Action Campaign (South Africa)
TAC revolutionized HIV/AIDS care in South Africa, campaigning tirelessly for antiretroviral access and healthcare equity.
Key Achievements: Won landmark 2002 court case mandating ARV access for mothers, catalyzing Africa’s largest public HIV treatment program. Today, 8,000+ members advocate for quality healthcare nationwide.
24. Africa Consumer Rights Watch (Kenya)
ACRW champions fair trade and consumer protection across Africa, ensuring access to safe goods and sustainable markets.
Key Achievements: Launched continent-wide campaigns against exploitative practices, educated communities on rights, and promoted ethical consumption through partnerships.
25. Komera (Rwanda)
Komera (“be strong” in Kinyarwanda) empowers girls through education, leadership, and health programs. Founded by Margaret Butler, it fosters confidence and community impact.
Key Achievements: Supported 500+ girls through secondary school, launched mentorship networks, and expanded holistic programs in Rwanda since 2013.
26. EASY WATER FOR EVERYONE (Ghana)
This NGO provides electricity-free water purification systems to rural communities, repurposing dialysis technology for clean water access.
Key Achievements: Installed systems in 44 sites across Ghana, Uganda, and Senegal, benefiting 10,000+ people. Plans to expand to 10 more sites by 2025.
27. Families are Nations (Zambia)
Founded in 1999, FAN combats early child marriage by empowering families as agents of social change.
Key Achievements: Reduced child marriage rates in target communities since 2013 through education, advocacy, and family-centered workshops.
